Herniated Disc Treatment Options

herniated disc treatment options
Have you experienced a Herniated Disk?

My father has had sharp pains in the left leg. He had an MRI and it found that there is a herniated disk in the back are i believe. Anyways, what are his treatment options? i read to do excersize but he can’t because of the severe pain? He goes to work but he shouldn’t because of the pain. He barely stands up he can’t sit or sleep. He lays on the floor because he thinks it’s good for him on a hard floor. He’s on his 2nd week with the pain. Have any of you experienced herniated disk and how did you treat it? (besides surgery answers please). THANK YOU.
My father is also a doctor and he knew it was herniated disk before an MRI and he knew what to do he does everything needed to be done. From taking tylenol to ease the pain to hot packs and cold packs and standing on one leg and other things. But none really work. What to do what to do?
He did physical therapy and the pain got worse afterwords.

Tell him to alternate cold and hot packs every 20 min.or so…He needs to take a few days from work to rest anyway. However I know how hard headed men can be.I have several herniated disc caused from having surgery so tell him to please put that off as long as possible…The Dr.can put some cortisone shots in it to help with the pain and he can issue pain medicine to back patients also. Tell him from someone who’s been there….go see a Dr. soon cause it’s only gonna get worse,Wish I could tell you something better but I know what I’ve been through and it’s no laughing matter.

Herniated Disc Options

herniated disc options
herniated disc between L4/5, cant see spec until mon. Lortab 5/500 no gd. Percocet 10/325 neither. combine?

The Lortab was a joke. Percocet 1st dose was great, 2nd two not so much. Surely I didn’t build a tolerance in one afternoon?? I’m just trying to make it until Monday when I see a specialist. What are my options?

You can try releasing the muscles in your back, the only thing that I am aware of that can keep your muscles pulling those disc into that problem for you. The release is one way to go:
Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg. If you can lean over the outside edge of your leg it will be better for your release. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.

Herniated Disc Healing Miracles

I have leg pain 2 wks after discectomy. Has it failed? I had no leg pain for 10 days post op. I’m worried sick

I’ve had sciatica from a herniated disc for over a year. I eventually had a micro discectomy 2 weeks ago. Immediately after the op I had no leg pain at all – it was like a miracle. However, now, 2 weeks on, the pain has returned. Is this because of the healing process on my damaged nerve, or has the op failed? Has anyone else had a similar experience? My follow up appointment is not for another 4 weeks and i’m terrified that I’ll have to live with this horrible pain forever. I’m only 30 and the thought of that is awful.

I have had two discectomies and that’s been the typical pattern for me with both. I had the first one at 32, so close to your age too.

In my experience, the pain returned at that point because that’s when my surgeon encourages a slow increase in physical activity. At my 10-day post-op visits both times, I was given a sheet of very simple exercises to begin doing (tip-toe standing, knee bends, and walking 20 minutes on the treadmill 5 times a week). They don’t seem all that hard, but it takes much more out of your body than you expect! The increase in activity will bring back some of the pain, but as you get stronger and more active, it dissipates again.

Make sure you’re following the restrictions your surgeon gave/gives you, down to the letter and only increase your activity in the amounts they direct. Also, be patient and allow your body time to recover completely. They may call it “micro” surgery, but your body may disagree!

And one other thing – that 18% success that other poster mentioned? That’s a crock, unless you have a freakishly bad surgeon =:-o

Herniated Disc Stretches

herniated disc stretches
Does anyone know any alternative methods for relieving pain in a herniated disk?

I recently was kicked off my dad’s insurance, because I’m 23. I had to get private insurance, and they excluded my back because I’ve had previous trouble with it. I have a herniation of disks L4 and L5. The muscle in the back of my leg is extremely tight, and the disk makes it impossible to stretch. I’ve lost weight, tried excersizes, but everyday it gets worse. Can anyone give me any info on alternative things? Remember, insurance won’t cover it.
Have tried:
*Ice
*Heat (Slightly helps)
*Aleve (Slightly helps)
*Tylenol
No stomach problems that I know of.
I have cracked the cartilidge in the same knee that the leg with the muscle tightness is in though

Castor Oil Packs
Tiger Balm or Salon Plas (heat Plaster or ointment)
Infra Red Light
Reiki or Quantum Touch (dealing with Hands on Healing)

Do you have stomach or digestive problems?

Herniated Disc Degenerative Disc Disease

herniated disc degenerative disc disease
I have chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, pinched nerves degenerative disc disease, low thyroid, stenosis?

herniated disc’s with nerve root involvement, depression and ptsd. I am 51 years old. I look fairly young and people look at me as if their is nothing wrong with you especially when I put the disability tag on the mirror of my car. I can not sleep? I am up now it is 3am. Today I did not get up until 2:30 pm. I was not sleeping, only in and out of sleep with bad dreams. I am not one bit tired but would love to get some sleep and be semi normal. Why?
Jan,

Wow, you get it and I am sorry that you are going through these difficulties. I ask for later appointments and explain that I have chronic fatigue and don’t trust myself to get up on time and the medical help seems to not understand they must also think that I am just lazy. I worked like crazy and kept up my home until…. now I am not the same person and really do feel burnt out. Thank you and God bless you and heal you.

I have the same problems as you (CFS, fibro, a couple pinched nerves, DDD, lumbar stenosis, low thyroid, herniated and extruded discs and PTSD) as well as epilepsy and I’m 23, so I totally get the whole “nothing looks wrong with you” until they see that my gran walks better than I do. The absolute most frustrating thing about chronic fatigue is the fact that you can STILL have insomnia… My doctor had to explain to me that “tired”, “exhausted” and “sleepy” can exist TOTALLY separate from each other. You can be dead-exhausted but not sleepy in the least, creating the frustration of not feeling like you can rest. And the frustration leading to freaky dreams is common. I get that too. People have told me things from “your diet is bad” to “you need to prioritise what you do better” to “You wouldn’t be so tired if you just lost weight/exercised more/etc”… It sucks. I’ve found that taking a benadryl 13 hours before I have to be awake does wonders, but that’s just me. Also, switching to vegetarian diet for 2 days a week (and I love meat too, lol) has helped me get more B-vitamins, which REALLY helps my energy.

Herniated Disc Neck Surgery

herniated disc neck surgery
How long does it take to recover from a herniate disk surgery on the neck?

I had the surgery done about three and a half months ago, and the doctor said the only physical therapy I needed was to walk a lot, to prevent blood clots on the legs. I am still experiencing the pains. I have gone back to the gym, but slowly after waiting at least six weeks following the surgery. Thank you for your time.

If you are talking about anterior cervical disc fusion, then yes, commonly PT is not needed. Although, I have seen a few people for a few weeks of gentle stretching and conditioning.

Most of the healing takes place within the first 3 months…but it’s common to have some aches and pains over the course of a year…however, it should be decreasing in frequency and intensity…especially arm symptoms

Herniated Disc Weakness

herniated disc weakness
If you complain about Weakness in the right leg and foot causes by Herniated Disc, will the Neurologist?

Perform the EMG test on 1 leg or Both?
I will be going for the EMG test in June

The only true way to ensure the reading of the test is accurate is by doing both legs. This will tell if there is any pressure or impedance on the nerve within either leg. Have you had MRI scans done? If not ask for that and see if it can be done in a standing position.
