Herniated disc and Sciatic pain?
i am very active and still in my teen years. I hearniated my disc (L4 L5) and have sciatic pain in my left leg and numbness in my foot and knee. The worst part of all is that i am unable to stand up straight and when i am standing i cant lift my head. the tear is 7mm by 17mm. About 3 months ago after a hockey game i noticed what felt like a pulled muscle, so i just ignored it but over the next month, it got worse and worse. For 4 weeks now i have been going to physio therapy where we have been useing laser treatment, electrio therapy, and traction and so far it is the same pain wise but i am able to stand up slightly straight but i still cant raise my head and i still have the numbness . my docter mentioned surgery and i am a little sceptical about that because i am only 18 years old. i would like to know how long people are out for with this injury?
Listen up. Is your doctor a Orthopedic S. or Neurologist? How did the injury happen. What you are describing definitely sounds like sciatic. Typically it starts from the lumbar region and goes inferiorly over the gluteal area stop right above the knee, and in severe cases it can cause tingling and numbness in the big toe and foot (Parasthysia and Hyperesthsia). When you describe the herniation as 17mm its almost unheard of. there is a condition that’s called sequestration that’s when the nuclear material (pulposis) protrude outside of the annular fibers and this is pretty severe. Consult a Chiropractor as well you may get more relief aside from the physical therapy. Good Luck.

Herniated disc pain relief?
ive been having pain from my L5 herniated disc for about like a year now?? is this normal?? ive also been going to physical therapy
Not sure if you mean:
-low back pain (LBP) (discogenic pain)
or
-nerve root pain (radiculopathy, sometimes called “sciatica”)
Hopefully you’ve seen a good spine specialist already. I recommend seeing a doctor who specializes in spine problems, rather than a generalist:
-physical medicine & rehab. physician (PM&R, like me)
-orthopedic spine surgeon
-maybe a neurologist, IF they see a high proportion of patients w/ spine problems
Discogenic LBP treatment options:
-time
-exercise/PT
-meds.
-percutaneous disc decompression (needle-based treatments to shrink the disc herniation)
-spine surgery (fusion or artificial disc replacement)
Radiculopathy (nerve root pain down a buttock and leg) treatment options:
-epidurals (there are several types)
-all of the above
Get help, there’s no need to suffer.

I have leg pain 2 wks after discectomy. Has it failed? I had no leg pain for 10 days post op. I’m worried sick
I’ve had sciatica from a herniated disc for over a year. I eventually had a micro discectomy 2 weeks ago. Immediately after the op I had no leg pain at all – it was like a miracle. However, now, 2 weeks on, the pain has returned. Is this because of the healing process on my damaged nerve, or has the op failed? Has anyone else had a similar experience? My follow up appointment is not for another 4 weeks and i’m terrified that I’ll have to live with this horrible pain forever. I’m only 30 and the thought of that is awful.
I have had two discectomies and that’s been the typical pattern for me with both. I had the first one at 32, so close to your age too.
In my experience, the pain returned at that point because that’s when my surgeon encourages a slow increase in physical activity. At my 10-day post-op visits both times, I was given a sheet of very simple exercises to begin doing (tip-toe standing, knee bends, and walking 20 minutes on the treadmill 5 times a week). They don’t seem all that hard, but it takes much more out of your body than you expect! The increase in activity will bring back some of the pain, but as you get stronger and more active, it dissipates again.
Make sure you’re following the restrictions your surgeon gave/gives you, down to the letter and only increase your activity in the amounts they direct. Also, be patient and allow your body time to recover completely. They may call it “micro” surgery, but your body may disagree!
And one other thing – that 18% success that other poster mentioned? That’s a crock, unless you have a freakishly bad surgeon =:-o

what is the best treatment for herniated and bulging discs in the neck?
I have a herniated disc in the C4/C5 region and a bulging disc below it. I have tried physical therapy, acupuncture, ice packs, heat packs – but nothing seems to relieve the pain. Any suggestions?
Rest is actually the worst thing you can do for this condition….
What type of rehab did you have? Just know there are many approaches to physical therapy in the treatment of this type of problem…some much more successful than others. My best recommendation is to see someone who has a certification in mechanial diagnosis and therapy. Go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org
Many people go to doctors for second opinions but never think to go to another therapist. Considering the vast amount of treatment approaches, this is almost necessary.
Certainly, if you’ve gone this route it may be helpful to talk to a pain specialist (as mentioned above) or even a neurosurgeon, depending on your symptoms.

I have both degenerative disk disease as well as a herniated disk. Some days are worse than others.?
I have had the steroid injections, I have been through physical therapy, and I take the medications that are given to me. I have seen two seperate neurosurgeons and they keep sending me for MRI and X-rays. Then they say it isn’t surgicially necessary at this time. But my question is how do they know when it is time if they aren’t the ones in pain? Is anyone in the same boat that I am? And who wants to get addicted to Vicodin and Soma and still not get relief.
The problem is that findings on MRIs and x-rays do not specifically tell who will respond well to surgery and who won’t. Rather, mechanical presentations if they have a certain predictability tend to give better results. The subjective amount of pain is unreliable is well.
The best outcomes of surgery tend to be when there is focal nerve compression that results in a corresponding loss of the nerve’s functioning.
…otherwise, its a crap shoot. When surgery is involved, you never want to make it a crap shoot.
My question to you would be what did you do in physical therapy? How long did you go/how many courses of PT have you had. There may be more speicifc suggestions I can make to you if you have not had certain types of physical therapy.

I have a herniated disk in my neck……?
I am currently at the end of a steriod treatment for a herniated cervical disk (neck). I have one more day of steroid pills to take. The pain has improved but not gone. Now, when I walk, I can feel and clearly hear a popping in my back. First I thought it was when my arms moved while walking, but when I kept my arms still, the popping still occurrs. This is really freaking me out. So, does anyone know the next step as far as this herniated disk goes (still pain) and does anyone know what the heck this popping noise in my back is????
What you are hearing is called crepitus. This is a result of the bones of the vertebrae rubbing together. This happens as the size of the disc shrinks thereby allowing the vertebrae to come into contact with each other. The best solution for you is to get a referral to a physical therapist now. They will work with you on strengthening the neck and back, improving posture which is such an important part of controlling this, and pain management. Relaxation of the muscles will help but it is not going to stop this problem. The muscles are capable of getting stronger and carrying the load of your head which is anywhere between twelve to sixteen pounds. As one ages these muscles get weaker and allow more stress to the disc. Posture becomes important as one moves away from the normal then the stresses increase on the disc. So the sooner you are in a program the quicker the recovery is going to be.

Herniated Disc Recovery Help?
So I just suffered a herniated disc in my lower back a few days ago and the major problem is golf season is right around the bend. So any recommendations to get over this or just help the pain go away quick enough for golf season?
If you suffered a herniated disc in the lumbar region, you will most likely have problems if you continue to golf due to the rotation of your spine during the swing. If you are unsure exactly what a herniated disc in that region involves, learn a bit more about it and see how it is aggravated by rotation. I work with many people with lumbar injuries and golf often triggers another onset of pain once they begin playing again.

What is a good way to get exercise with two herniated disks?
I used to walk 3.5 miles a day and go to the gym daily. I moved from the city temporarily to help my parents and the live in the mountains in the middle of nowhere. Walking on unlevel ground is bad for my back(confirmed by chiropractor back in the city). I tried for 3 months but jus couldn’t take it. the closest gym is 45 minutes away so that just isn’t ideal for a daily commute. I just got back from vacation and walked everyday and swam and it really helps. ( I really realised how much I miss my daily exersise). A good treadmill is really too expensive. Aerobics is too rouh on my back as well. Any ideas what I cando for exersise until I move back to level ground??

Does anyone know any alternative methods for relieving pain in a herniated disk?
I recently was kicked off my dad’s insurance, because I’m 23. I had to get private insurance, and they excluded my back because I’ve had previous trouble with it. I have a herniation of disks L4 and L5. The muscle in the back of my leg is extremely tight, and the disk makes it impossible to stretch. I’ve lost weight, tried excersizes, but everyday it gets worse. Can anyone give me any info on alternative things? Remember, insurance won’t cover it.
Have tried:
*Ice
*Heat (Slightly helps)
*Aleve (Slightly helps)
*Tylenol
No stomach problems that I know of.
I have cracked the cartilidge in the same knee that the leg with the muscle tightness is in though
Castor Oil Packs
Tiger Balm or Salon Plas (heat Plaster or ointment)
Infra Red Light
Reiki or Quantum Touch (dealing with Hands on Healing)
