I have had 2 surgerys on l5s1, making my disk hair thin and shaped weird. A NEW herniated disk on l5s1 that “may” be impinging on right s1 nerve root. SEVERE DDD in both disks, and a buldging disk l4l5. I also feel I injured more 2 days after my last MRI was taken, so these results may be even worse.
My options are PT and stay on narcotics the rest of my life, or a 2 level fusion is suggested. Being in so much pain, I agreed to have the referral to a spine surgeon, but I am having 2nd thoughts. I am afraid to have the fusion, and still have to be in misery and on narcotics.
I only know what I can read on google about the 2 level fusion. It seems the opions might be byest (sp) because they all come from the doc’s. I understand it is not a cure for pain, but to help releive it, which means I might still have to take pills and be miserable? And if I don’t have it, my back is only going to get worse and I might just be avoiding the inevitable. What do you think?
Ask your physician if you can be prescribed a pain patch called Fentanyl rather than having to take narcotics.
Fentanyl is a synthetic morphine, but through the patch, is delivered over a 3 day period for constant pain relief (or a huge difference vs. what is normal without medicine).
My sister has had 3 back surgeries…one was a fusion, and it ultimately had to be removed because she was allergic to the metal used to bind it together.
Seek an allergist out and make sure you’re not allergic to any of the materials they will use, FIRST, and then try the Fentanyl.
If any of this doesn’t work, fusion may be your only option, but there are now so many more things that can be done that you should rule out first.
My sister’s fusion was horrible, and I have 2 other family members (one who DIED from complications of multiple fusions) that have also not been successful with them.

My Mom has four herniated discs in her neck and she gets really bad head aches and neck aches. The surgery is just too risky and expensive and may not even work but just make the pain worse. But her head aches are to the point where she can’t function anymore. I don’t know if there is anything and i have tried every search engine on the planet and can’t find an answer to this. In April I had an MRI which showed a slight herniated disc which caused great discomfort. I tried therapy, until insurance stopped it. However it has reoccured again on the opposite side now. The pain has moved down into the shoulder, bad headaches, etc. Is it possible to have a complete herniation now? If so, what can you do to take care of a herniation?

I am by no means a medical expert but it could have been just reaggitated or maybe have gotten worse. I really don’t know if there are any other ways to find out if it has gotten worse without an MRI. I would speak with your doctor on this to see what he/she has to say. Tell them that it has come back on the opposite side and you are having a lot of pain with it. I think the only way to “fix” a herniation is by surgery but being pregnant I really don’t know what options are out there for you.
I myself, have disc degeneration in my back, fortunately not too bad but I still have it. I have tried the therapy, pain meds, and cortizone shots. Ask your doctor about getting a cortizone shot and what he/she thinks about it. It may help you out for a short time until you and your doctor can find other options for you.

What happens in a post-op lower back surgery, laminectomy/micro-discectomy to correct herniated disk?

I have had this done to my lower back. It can be done 2 ways, either with a light sedative, or not. You lay on an x-ray machine so it can be precise. The shot I get hurts a lot. I felt the pain shoot all the way down my leg which is where the pain was. The improvement was amazing. I would say I had 90% relief with the first shot. I felt no pain and could do anything I wanted. I imagine it will be similat with what you have.

I’ve had lower back pain since childhood. it hurts when i sit too long or when i stand too long. it feels better when i walk or run as long as i am moving. over the years it has spread to my buttocks and traveling all the way down to my thighs in the back and the back of my knees and my calf and up to above my heel…it use to be on the right leg but now it is on my left leg…..it switches back and forth from time to time…to relieve my pain i usually ask people to stand on my back or my leg and that some how helps. I have visited two doctors and had a back x-ray done and both doctors tell me they do not see anything unusuall…….so i decided to use google and my syptoms look really alike with a pinched nerve or herniated disk….the pain is very similar to those……..i just wanted to ask what i can possibly do to make this pain go away….the doctors are not helping at all and advil doesnt help either
Ask for MRI and spine/neuro specialist. The combination of these two is the only way to determine if you have herniated disc (with sciatica) and what to do about it. I wasted so much time and suffered so much needlessly prior to that. Stretches and core strengthening exercises, combined with swimming helped take away the pain. I don’t suggest doing it on your own before seeing a specialist and physical theraphist. You can also looks up some yoga stretching exercises for sciatica. If you decide to do any of this on your own follow one simple rule – if it hurts (more) don’t do it, if it helps keep doing it. It took me a year to get back to normal and I’m almost pain free.

I have 3 herniated discs in my neck. has anyone had treatment besides disc replacement, fusion surgery or injections?
I have a prolapsed disc in my lumbar spine and when the MRI result was revealed my Doctor stuck a Fentanyl Patch on me, did not offer surgery, or injections, just the patch. Three years now and still pain free. Best of Luck
