Herniated Disc Treatment Options

herniated disc treatment options
Have you experienced a Herniated Disk?

My father has had sharp pains in the left leg. He had an MRI and it found that there is a herniated disk in the back are i believe. Anyways, what are his treatment options? i read to do excersize but he can’t because of the severe pain? He goes to work but he shouldn’t because of the pain. He barely stands up he can’t sit or sleep. He lays on the floor because he thinks it’s good for him on a hard floor. He’s on his 2nd week with the pain. Have any of you experienced herniated disk and how did you treat it? (besides surgery answers please). THANK YOU.
My father is also a doctor and he knew it was herniated disk before an MRI and he knew what to do he does everything needed to be done. From taking tylenol to ease the pain to hot packs and cold packs and standing on one leg and other things. But none really work. What to do what to do?
He did physical therapy and the pain got worse afterwords.

Tell him to alternate cold and hot packs every 20 min.or so…He needs to take a few days from work to rest anyway. However I know how hard headed men can be.I have several herniated disc caused from having surgery so tell him to please put that off as long as possible…The Dr.can put some cortisone shots in it to help with the pain and he can issue pain medicine to back patients also. Tell him from someone who’s been there….go see a Dr. soon cause it’s only gonna get worse,Wish I could tell you something better but I know what I’ve been through and it’s no laughing matter.

Herniated Disc Options

herniated disc options
herniated disc between L4/5, cant see spec until mon. Lortab 5/500 no gd. Percocet 10/325 neither. combine?

The Lortab was a joke. Percocet 1st dose was great, 2nd two not so much. Surely I didn’t build a tolerance in one afternoon?? I’m just trying to make it until Monday when I see a specialist. What are my options?

You can try releasing the muscles in your back, the only thing that I am aware of that can keep your muscles pulling those disc into that problem for you. The release is one way to go:
Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg. If you can lean over the outside edge of your leg it will be better for your release. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.

Herniated Disc Disease

herniated disc disease
I have both degenerative disk disease as well as a herniated disk. Some days are worse than others.?

I have had the steroid injections, I have been through physical therapy, and I take the medications that are given to me. I have seen two seperate neurosurgeons and they keep sending me for MRI and X-rays. Then they say it isn’t surgicially necessary at this time. But my question is how do they know when it is time if they aren’t the ones in pain? Is anyone in the same boat that I am? And who wants to get addicted to Vicodin and Soma and still not get relief.

The problem is that findings on MRIs and x-rays do not specifically tell who will respond well to surgery and who won’t. Rather, mechanical presentations if they have a certain predictability tend to give better results. The subjective amount of pain is unreliable is well.

The best outcomes of surgery tend to be when there is focal nerve compression that results in a corresponding loss of the nerve’s functioning.

…otherwise, its a crap shoot. When surgery is involved, you never want to make it a crap shoot.

My question to you would be what did you do in physical therapy? How long did you go/how many courses of PT have you had. There may be more speicifc suggestions I can make to you if you have not had certain types of physical therapy.

Cervical disk disease, herniated disk & nerves involved.

Herniated Disc Back Spasm

herniated disc back spasm
What happens in a post-op lower back surgery, laminectomy/micro-discectomy to correct herniated disk?

Immediately after, my areas in a L5-S1 herniation that were sciatic, became very number, but now it’s four days after surgery, and it seems like some of the pain is coming back. I’ve also had the odd back spasm. Is this normal, and what else can I expect? Two weeks to follow up with doc.
Not the clearest question. The pain may be coming back in my leg, right now it’s still mostly number, there areas that were previously extremely painful from the sciatica.

Sounds pretty normal to me. I’ve had two fusion surgeries. You should let your surgeon know when you are there for your follow-up.

You may want to ask him about something like Soma for the spasms by just calling them and telling them about them. They will help prevent them.

It’s pretty common for the pain to be there for awhile but not the pain that feels like it is burning. That one you shouldn’t be having. Here are 2 sites you should check out. And good luck recovering.

Herniated Disc Or Pulled Muscle

herniated disc or pulled muscle
I’m having lower left back pain i’ve had MRI’s and x-rays no doctor can find out what’s wrong any suggestions?

I’ve been examined for scoliosis, herniated disc’s, rib fractures, and pulled muscles. nothing seems to fit. I also had an ultra sound done to rule out kidney stones. I’m desperate for answers. the pain is between my last ribs and hip, it starts from the spine and radiates forward toward my hip. It seems to be extremely aggravated by sitting. No numbness or tingling or any other pain. it’s slowly been getting worse over about 3 months.

I’d see a neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spines. If it’s not spine/bone related, consider a urologist to check on you kidney. While back pain due to kidneys is rare, it may be something to think about if everything else has been ruled out.

Herniated Disc Neck Surgery

herniated disc neck surgery
How long does it take to recover from a herniate disk surgery on the neck?

I had the surgery done about three and a half months ago, and the doctor said the only physical therapy I needed was to walk a lot, to prevent blood clots on the legs. I am still experiencing the pains. I have gone back to the gym, but slowly after waiting at least six weeks following the surgery. Thank you for your time.

If you are talking about anterior cervical disc fusion, then yes, commonly PT is not needed. Although, I have seen a few people for a few weeks of gentle stretching and conditioning.

Most of the healing takes place within the first 3 months…but it’s common to have some aches and pains over the course of a year…however, it should be decreasing in frequency and intensity…especially arm symptoms

Herniated Disc Fusion Surgery

herniated disc fusion surgery
I need a disc fusion?

I had back surgery 2yrs. ago for a herniated disc. It was massive. The doctor took so much of my disc out that now the disc is being crushed. He said that I have to have a fusion now. I was wondering if anyone could let me know details about surgery. Disc (L5,S1).Will it have any effect of mobility that kind of thing. Now he informs me he should have done the fusion in the first place. Thank you for your help.

L5-S fusion should not affect your mobility that much. But it will to some extent. Remember, back surgery is hit and miss. You may get better or you may not. But sounds like you have no choice.

Herniated Disc Pain Sitting

Causes Of A Herniated Disc – Pain Clinics Florida

You likely have heard of a herniated disc.  Moreover, you generally are aware that a herniated disc can be quite painful.  Therefore, the best course of action that you can – and need – to take is to avoid a herniated disc in the first instance.  Through this article you are provided an overview of the causes of a herniated disc.  By better understanding causes of a herniated disc you will be in a far better position to be able to prevent having a herniated disc in the first instance,  the best possible position to avoid the pain of a herniated disc.

The most common cause of a herniated disc is what might best be called general wear and tear.  Typically, a person will end up with a herniated disc because of an activity that is repeated time and again in the work lives.  For example, if you have a job that requires lifting on a regular basis, you may be more likely to end up with a herniated disc. (Indeed, even a job that requires you to sit for extended periods of time can also result in a herniated disc.)

In some instances, a sudden (or traumatic) injury may cause a herniated disc as well.  Rather than being caused over time due to wear and tear, a person is involved in some sort of physical activity that results in a herniated disc.

Recent clinical research has revealed that there can also be a genetic component to a herniated disc.  In other words, some people are more susceptible to suffering a herniated disc than are others because of their genetic makeup.  Those individuals that genetically are more inclined to suffer a herniated disc are identified with a gene mutation that effects the proteins that are associated with spinal discs.  This mutation makes a herniated disc more likely.

In order to avoid suffering a herniated disc, there are some steps that you can take to prevent such an occurrence.  For example, if you are required to do lifting, take care in that you do not overdo and that you utilize your legs appropriately when you are called upon to lift heavier objects.  In the end, by taking appropriate, proper precautions you will be in the best possible position to be able to prevent the occurrence of a herniated disc, even if you might have a genetic disposition making a herniated disc more likely.
