Herniated Disc Upper Back

herniated disc upper back
I know that this sounds kind of crazy but can large breast cause a herniated disk?

I am a 34 year old mother of 2 and i have always had large breast {DDD}. And i have always had problems with my upper back and now i find that i have a herniated disk in my lower back, i have not had a injury or accident so could the large breast be the problem and should i have a reduction

I think herniation is not often from accidents but more often from repetitive stressful use (bending and lifting – people usually think men picking up boxes but in women, picking up babies/children is a BIG stress). I don’t think large breasts can *cause* herniation, but I think carrying around the weight of large breasts can put more strain on the back, so it could possibly contribute.
The breast reduction surgery question is a little harder. Ask your doctor if s/he thinks the breasts were a contributing factor and if s/he would recommend breast surgery, first of all. Then get more information about other factors to consider (infection rate, how long you’ll have to be not active after the surgery) before deciding. (Also take some consideration of whether they’ll be likely to grow large again after surgery. A friend of mine got a breast reduction to a C cup, and within a couple years they were up to a D. She is a little overweight. And she started out as DD or something, so she says she’s still happy with the results. I don’t know what kind of experiences other people have had.)

how to relieve lower back pain from soccer?

okay i play soccer i was injured for a while but the second day of practice i got lower back pain and it hurts when i sit in different positions or extend my leg. i don’t know if its because i sit down for a long time while playing video games ..please help

I had this happen to me during soccer and apparently it was because my hamstrings and quads (muscles in the legs) were too tight.
Since they are so tight they are straining for muscles of your lower back. The first step is to ice your back as much as possible to reduce the existing injury, and then if it doesnt hurt to much stretch your legs out twice a day. After the pain goes down start using heat on you back daily to relax it, but if it starts to hurt again switch back to ice. Make sure you stretch even after your back stops hurting, and if you can start to strengthen your core muscles because that is the sure fire way to prevent back injuries. AND when you are playing video games don’t slouch keep a good posture. If things get really bad try to lie down and stand straight as much as you can vs. sitting.

Herniated Disc And Exercise

herniated disc and exercise
sudden and severe return of leg pain from herniated disc. what can i do?

about 2.5 years ago i began experiencing leg pain and was diagnosed with 2 herniated discs. i was put on lite duty for 18 mos (i wait tables, had to hostess)
after countless docs pills chiros and breakdowns, i felt better about a year ago and retrned to waiting tables. my mri showed that the hernaition had beome a sligt bulge.

i was movin a few wks ago and felt like i may have reinjured the disc, had some low back pain and a little leg pain.
over the past few days the pain has become almost intolerable. im miserable at work, when standing, sittin… its keeping me up at nite

the pain i have now is worse than its ever been and its constant no matter what i do. i recently started a new job and dont have health ins. and even if i did, i know theyd tell me to get off my feet for atleast a few weeks and thats just not an option

i have a few back strengtening exercises i do, but what else can i do for myself?

Feed your body with nutrition like calcium magnesium and potassium (chelate) . Your pain level has more than likely caused these to plumment. I would also go to a yoga master so they can help you with what stretching you need. I had the same problem and I went to a barron baptise weekend and even my bulging disk was gone. I couldnt believe how it changed my life. I will never go back to chiros and drs for back pain.

Pinched Sciatic Nerve

Remember that foraminal stenosis and spinal stenosis are normal parts of the aging process for most patients.  Spinal degeneration, such as disc disease and herniations, is par for the course.  Most of the time, these diagnoses are made in an attempt to explain the occurrence of back pain, although subsequent treatments are almost never successful, especially in the long term.  Furthermore, the majority of people with identical anatomical issues have no pain whatsoever… This is the best evidence that the various structural issues most commonly blamed for enacting sciatica are mistakenly diagnosed.  No wonder the condition has such a terrible reputation as a long term and treatment–resistant syndrome.  After all, if the diagnosis is wrong and treatments are targeting a mistakenly identified causation, then how can patients ever find relief?

The herniated disc explanation for sciatica can be accurate, but not in the way some patients perceive.  Due to the watering-down of medical information, and in some cases, the fundamental lack of understanding by diagnosticians, some patients actually feel that their sciatic nerve is being pinched by the herniated disc directly.  This could not be further from the truth.  The sciatic nerve is made up of nerve roots from the L4, L5, S1, S2 and S3 vertebral levels and the herniated disc may be compressing one or more of these roots, not the sciatic nerve itself.  The actual sciatic nerve forms far below the end of the spinal column, making this theory ridiculous and anatomically unviable. In most cases, it is the L4, L5 or S1 nerve root affected, due to herniations at L4/L5 or L5/S1.  However, in my experience, the overwhelming percentage of patients suspected to be suffering from foraminal stenosis or spinal stenosis in the lumbar spine or lumbo-sacral juncture as the source of their pain are grossly misdiagnosed.  It is quite rare for pinched nerve roots to occur in the spine and the best way to double check the diagnosis is to compare the expected symptomatic pattern to the actual clinical expression.  In almost every case, there will be great discrepancies, making structural nerve compression the least likely source of pain, even when diagnostic imaging suggests otherwise…

The next possible situation involving an actual pinched sciatic nerve is the pain condition known as piriformis syndrome.  This occurs when the sciatic nerve is impinged upon by the piriformis muscle.  Some patients demonstrate an anatomical abnormality which locates their sciatic nerve directly through the piriformis muscle, rather than beneath it.  These patients are statistically more likely to suffer piriformis syndrome than others who do not share this bodily variation, but this is certainly not an absolute rule.  It is well known that most cases of piriformis syndrome have less to do with the anatomy or suspected injury, and far more to do with regional oxygen deprivation of the involved musculature, enacting spasms and painful symptoms.  In the vast majority of affected patients, the source of this ischemia is surely psychogenic.

Actual pinched sciatic nerve issues can be caused by several known reasons.  The first is inflammation related to traumatic injury.  This event is most often found in patients who experience severe damage to the legs or buttocks from a car accident, significant fall or other form of direct trauma.  The inflammatory process can put pressure on the sciatic nerve almost anywhere in the lower body, enacting symptoms often associated with a pinched nerve.  Luckily, inflammation is a temporary concern and these neuropathy issues should resolve completely, even without any formal treatment.

A pinched sciatic nerve is a common expression used by both doctors and laymen alike to explain chronic back and leg pain issues stemming from a suspected compressive neuropathy condition.  It is certainly possible for the sciatic nerve to suffer impingement due to a wide range of reasons.  However, the most commonly cited example of sciatic nerve compression is a lumbar herniated disc, which makes no sense, being that the sciatic nerve does not even connect directly into the spine.

The Management and Relief of Back Pain

Well now, I’ve done a lot of research on back pain management and I’m as confused as you are. As if it’s not enough that one has to endure back pain, one must also, all the experts agree, manage it. Odd. They never talk about managing toothache.

So, why back pain management? Although it’s never said in so many words, I suspect that back pain is one of those rather nasty disorders that, while not socially unacceptably nasty, doesn’t ever really go away. We’re not talking here about your wife’s pregnancy back pains or back pain caused by a tumour; we’re talking your average Joe’s back pain that just … won’t go away.

The bad news is that this sort of general back pain is usually caused by bad posture and incorrect back health. The good news is that essentially general back pain is a consequence of bad back pain management and can be managed by good back pain management. Make sense?

When back pain treatment doesn’t work, it’s time to start managing the pain. Back pain management, like back pain, varies for different individuals. For some, back pain management means learning to put up with it and maybe taking a pain killer when it becomes really unbearable. But that’s not good back pain management.

Good back pain management starts with changing your lifestyle and your attitude towards your body, particularly your back and spine.

–Your spine supports you; without it, you’d be a a floppy toy. Your spine is supported by the muscles of your back. When they’re weak and / or inflexible, your spine strains to perform even the most simple movements, including bending and carrying. So, the first step in managing back pain is to develope a gentle exercise program to keep your muscles fit, supple and healthy.

–There are many types of exercise that are good for your back muscles, including yoga, walking and swimming. Water aerobics, for instance, is fun, inexpensive and recommended by most doctors and experts in the field of back pain management.

–Adopt a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating correctly, exercising and substituting cigarettes and punishing exercise routines with homeopathic herbal and vitamin supplements.

–Learn about good posture, particularly if you have a job that has you always sitting at a desk or if you are on your feet all day. Always bend the knees when bending or lifting; always hollow the back when kneeling; when carrying, distribute weight evenly; when standing for long periods stand with your feet slightly apart; when pushing or pulling try to keep your back straight and take the strain on your arms.

Back pain management should be seen as a long-term investment in good health.

A long soak in a hot tub, the steam delicately scented with the fragrance of oil of lavendar. Candles throw thin shadows on the damp walls. Music plays softly in the background. You’re content, relaxed, following a delicious meal including oysters and just a few wicked drops of champagne. Your partner has promised you a sensuous back massage when you get out of the tub … and then, who knows?

An erotic fantasy? No, just sure-fire back pain relief.

Back pain relief doesn’t have to be only about traction or exercise routines thought out by a particularly sadistic ex-marine (probably on the run) or vile-tasting herbal back pain relief remedies created by Hyde’s evil twin – the chemist from hell.

Back pain relief should be pleasant, relaxing, relieving, simple, enjoyable and effective.

Visualization techniques, massage, hot or cold therapy treatments, good posture training programs, light exercise routines, a sensible diet, yoga for back pain relief, hynotherapy, acupuncture and the purchase of a good bed will all contribute to relieving your back pain.

Unless, of course, your back pain is caused by a seemingly unrelated disease; but most Americans suffer some form of backache at some stage in their life and the reality of back pain is that it is most often caused by poor posture, too little exercise, work-related back strains and stresses, sports injuries or a touch of arthritis.

For these conditions, back pain relief involves a variety of sensible treatments that include stopping smoking, learning new posture habits, taking the dog for a walk every night and pampering your back with regular massage.

I suffer with severe upper back pain, caused by sitting over a typewriter most of the day, even when I’m not working. I relief it by massaging my shoulders when I take a break; I swim every day and then lie on the firm grass and do some gentle yoga; I make a conscious effort to sit with my legs comfortably and firmly on the ground when I’m at my desk; I treat myself to a hot bath once a week that includes an infusion of garden herbs; I take vitamins daily and I make sure I walk around every half hour to relieve muscle tension.

My oldest friend (in both senses of the word) suffers with what she calls her ‘bad knees’. She can hardly climb a flight of stairs. And so she avoids exercise. Fatal mistake. Back pain relief is a matter of practicing good back health; just as you shower or bath every day to keep your skin healthy. Exercise is vital to keep the muscles of your spine supple and strong to enable them to perform their job – keeping you upright.
