I just got diagnosed with a herniated disc in my back.?
I was wondering if anyone could tell me some other treatment options other than surgery. I think I’m going to buy an inversion table and see if that will help. Can an Inversion table cure a herniated disc.
Treatment options would depend solely on how much of your disc has become herniated. Some can take the pain but, truthfully, since it is herniated, I would suggest surgery. If it was just a bulging disc, then you could try and deal with it.
I hope you can come to a good decision about this. I know that many have had surgery and it has been successful. Get another opinion.

I have been living with chronic pain for over 2 yrs now. It started with a herniated cervical disc that trapped a nerve. I’ve had meds, physical therapy including traction, surgery and I am still in freakn’ pain!!!!!!!!!! I honestly go to bed in pain, wake up w/pain. I have tried mind over matter, ignoring, which c’mon we all know tht’s impossible. Two months after surgery I was diagnosed w/fibromyalgia then a month ago “maybe not fibro” I’ve been tested for all kinds of things RA, Lupus, any autoimmune. After the surgery I had MRI and EMG I am told there was no change at that time. (march 08). I literally can’t walk in the am and when I go to bed my whole body screams pain. I have told my MD I could no longer live like this and she put me on suicide watch for 4 days. I honestly don’t want to die but I also don’t want to live like this . Any Suggestions???????? Thank-you
Glad to hear you really don’t want to die.
You’re right, it does not seem fair that some have to live in such pain.
But many of us do.
Have you ever watched those shows called Mystery Diagnosis?
It’s interesting to know so many people have found it takes a long, long time to find the answer to their problems. But eventually they do.
So they haven’t figured out what the pain is for sure?
In the meantime, you are miserable, eh?
And medications and therapy have not helped?
It sounds like you have become one “raw peeled nerve.”
What does your doctor say about the severe pain?
Can you get another second opinion from another physician
who has dealt with severe chronic pain?
Unfortunately, many doctors are hesitant to give the sufferer enough medication to “do the job,” because of the patients who have abused their meds. You certainly don’t want to live like a zombie.
The only thing I can tell you, while you wait for the final results of all the tests, so they can possibly give you the proper treatment and/or medications, is… that I will pray for you.
These are some excerpts: God and your physical pain. Though racked by physical pain on the cross, it was His spirit, not His body, which Jesus committed to God (Luke 23:46). This is not to minimize physical pain, for God delivered many from it in Scripture. But it is to remember that even when physical pain cannot be removed, God is still the comforter of the spirit.

my MRI said that my L4 & L5 has a mild difused bulge and that L5 and S1 central disc extrusion. What is this?
I thought it was a herniated disc, went to pt and now they say pt and or cortisone. Is this good, bad???
I still have some pain and feel as I’ve learned to “deal” with it. I use ibuprofen and flexeril. When I sit for long periods I get up and feel as I need to stretch and also my legs get sore. I feel best laying down, but can’t do that all day. I know I should lose weight, but it hurts, I am 5 5 and weight 165.
Thanks to everyone for all your great answers and suggestions. I am new and don’t quite know how to work this yet!
There are 3 types of disc herniation: contained (protrusion), extrusion, and sequestration. The disc is made up of the outer annulus fibrosis (AF), the vertebral end plates that the AF attaches to, and the gelatinous inside called the nucleus pulposus (NP). When the disc is “contained” the NP has bulged outward to the AF, but is not pressing on the outer layers of the AF. If the disc is extruded, then the NP has reached the outer layers of the AF and is pressing on the intervertebral canal (hole in vertebrae for spinal cord, but at L5level the spinal cord is the cauda equina–bundle of nerve fibers on the end of the spinal cord). Sequestration involves a piece of the NP “broken off” and inside the canal.
I can’t tell you if it’s good or bad. However, it’s always best to try the conservative method first. Try to stay active. I think gentle yoga might help, but listen to your body. Only you know what it’s feeling.

what is a disc buldge? and what is narrowing of the left neural foramina with compression of existin nerveroot
i had 2 surgeries i herniated disc removal , l5-s1, then a spinal fusion l5-s1.still in pain and had an mri yesterday. the results say…1- post-decompression @ the level of l5-s1 as described above with questionable area of scaring vs.debris present in the left neural foramina which is contributing to moderate narrowing of the left neural formina with compression of the left exiting nerve root…#2…disc bulge @ the level of l3-l4 and l4-l5..? can anyone break it down 4 me?…. does it meen i have 2 more herniations in my discs?…and do i have a pinched nerve? thanks 4 your time…derrick cooper.
disk bulge is another term for herniation and they seem to be saying that either scarring or debris is pressing on the left nerve root (a pinched nerve)
I’m an 18 year old female. I just got diagnosed with a mild irritation of the sciatic nerve and a possible lumbar herniated disc. I was given a painkiller ( diclofenac) and axogaurd. Which doesnt seem to be working , and I don’t know but my muscles are twitching more and the pain in my thigh has become more frequent, not excruciating , but pretty annoying. should I ask for a stronger painkiller ? I’m leaving for my vacation in a week . I don’t want to be in any discomfort.
cuz the things that caused the herniation in the first place have not gotten corrected;; no matter how much you think this is gonna go away, it’s not until you make changes to your usage of your trunk…you should have ask for a PT referral for body mechanics..every time you guard to protect that back from pain, you are pulling on the muscles & then restricting them in a way that causes them to yank on that already herniated disc (the vertebrae surrounding to be exact);; when you hold your breath, the same situation arises (breathe OUT instead, like when you sit<>stand, getting in & out of the car, getting in & out of bed & rolling in bed);; the anti-inflammatories will help get the swelling down which is also another cause of your sciatica..a cold pack will help to supplement your pn meds..& you just need a more effective pain med than the one you are taking presently;; but honestly, the pain meds & mm relaxers will help the back but won’t overcome the way you treat it…good luck on your vacation, but treat your back well..if you are driving vs flying, put the pillow on your chest…NOT the back of the seat (it will only be worse for you back there..way too much movement)..remember, in front..again good luck!!

what are the rules the doctors give you after herniated disc surgery? Do you have to stay in bed for awhile?
My fiance is about to have this surgery and I want to know what I should expect.
He will spend a lot of time sitting up and laying down but he must get up and start light walking asap. He will be pretty sore for a few days and the pain meds will sedate him for 3 -5 days. After about 2 weeks he can start to try and see what he can and cannot do. His body will let him know.
Make sure to drink plenty of water with the pain meds and don’t take more than the dosage stated no matter what. If the pain medication doesn’t relieve the pain call the doctor and ask him for help.
Good luck
he’ll be fine and is lucky to have someone that cares about him enough to find out ahead what to expect. Because he will need your help

Can a woman get pregnant while having herniated and bulging discs in their back?
Why not? What does that have to do with conceiving a child. The only problem is that sex might be uncomfortable with disc problems and there might be more of a strain on her back when she’s pregnant but, other than that, I don’t see why not. Of course, your GYNO is the best person to ask about this. We don’t know your individual situation and yours might be different and prohibit pregnancy for some reason.
In any case, maybe surgery would be indicated on your back if that is indeed stopping you from being about to get pregnant and have a baby.
No signs of herniated disk pain now 5 months pregnant
How long did it take for your herniated cervical disc to start feeling better?
I know everybody is different, but I am just curious. I have 2 herniated cervical disc and have had 11 physical therapy appointments so far. I am still having pain from my shoulder blade down to my finger tips, plus some tingling and numbness in my hand. My doctor said I’m not improving as much as he would like. If I’m not feeling better in a month (8 more p.t. appt’s), we will be testing for nerve damage. I also started taking Mobic last night (anti-inflammatory) and it’s not helping. I’m already taking Vicodin for the pain and Robaxyn for muscle spasms.
What has your experience been like?
Hi Richard,
I’m 33, 5′4″ 115 pounds. I have an office job so I pretty much sit all day. I keep healthy and don’t smoke.
Oh…and my therapist is doing everything you mentioned, plus massage..
Everyone is different. No two injuries to the same area react the same for everyone. You don’t state your age, weight, height, degree of shape that you are in, posture, nor career. All of those are points that make up what is going to happen and how long recovery is. If you smoke the recovery time is greatly increased. The number of appointments may or may not be enough depending on who is doing the therapy with you. There are many techniques that will hasten the relief but that will depend upon the practitioners experience. Talk this over with the therapist and explain how you feel if they are good they should modify the program and hopefully what they are doing is hands on work and not the use of modalities. The fluid material of the disc is more like a yogurt than water and it will move but more slowly than that of water. You sort of have to influence that material away from the nerves. Posture is so important in this as when you are not in proper posture it definitely influences the material to flow towards the nerves. Also poor posture is stretching the muscles making them more irritated and that also caused pain. Some people are lucky in that within a few visits the pain starts to recede while others it takes a while. Surgery is not something that you would want as it is risky and the failure rate is around fifty percent. Work with your therapist and if therapy consists of just modalities such as ultrasound, electric stimulation, heat or ice then if that is all they are going to do find another therapist that will work with you hands on without the other stuff.

My mom hurt her back at work & is in alot of pain, wondering how I can help her if at all?
My mom works at a factory & injured her back awhile ago & had xrays done & had a herniated disc, well it healed some & was ok until last week or so she bent a certain way & now she is in total pain & pretty much laid up. She went to her chiropractor & he said her pelvis is causing her pain due to the repetive work she does at work. I feel so bad for her & she is in so much pain & Ive tried to help her by getting her things, doing grocery shopping for her etc but is there any remedies or anything to help her w/ the pain? Her chiropractor never gave her any pain meds.
Here are a few sites you should look at with Mom. They can really help. I’m sure she is proud of you for wanting to help.
Here are a few that can help her deal with the pain
She has a worker’s comp case,, have her go to an Orthopedic doc or at least a GP. Forget the chiropractor unless at least a MD refers one. If she has had this condition it won’t get better,,,only worse without proper medical treatment. Her employers insurance has to pay for it so get the best medical care you can,,, not the cheapest.
I have a spine injury and know what happens if you don’t take care of it. You can help her the best by getting her good medical care. Good luck
