Herniated Disc Weight Loss

herniated disc weight loss
weight loss?

who knows of a way, other than starving yourself or drinking my food to lose 10lbs in a week?

Mind you I cant really do any excercises, i have a herniated disk in my back. I think losing this BIG A$$ TIRE from around my waist and back will help with the pain….

and please no rude comments…thats not why I posted this…..

Honestly it is unhealthy to loose more than 5 pounds in a week if you want to start loosing weight start by changing your eating habits. You only need 1200 calories per day to live. These need to be right calories. You should take a multivitamin and do start working with a physical therapist on a workout program that fits you special needs. You should speak to nutritionist about a 1200 calorie per day diet and stick to the menu plan they give you. The first ten pounds you loose will be water after that it will be harder to lose the weight so you must be dedicated to what ever program you go with. You must also approach this with a positive attitude and look at it as a change of lifestyle not a temporary vanity kick. Loosing weight is a process you can’t just do it over night and have the weight stay off.

Herniated Disc L4 L5 S1

herniated disc l4 l5 s1
I need a generic and inexpensive extended release painkiller. Suggestions?

It is for bulging and possibly now herniated disk at l5 s1 and l4 l5.

Thanks for any help.

There are not a lot of options for extended release “painkillers”. OxyContin and Opana are two commonly used extended release options that I do not believe are available in generic form.

There are 3 other choices in extended release formulations, all of which are available in generic form-

FENTANYL transdermal patches (brand name- Duragesic) are patches worn for 72 hours that deliver a set amount of the potent narcotic fentanyl steadily into your blood stream.

MORPHINE ER (brand name- many including Avinza and MS Contin) are 12 hour formulations of morphine sulfate and generally regarded as the gold standard of suspended release painkillers.

METHADONE (brand name- Dolophin) is a well known 8-12 hour pain medicine that is more commonly used in maintenance therapy in treating heroin addicts. It is effective like the aforementioned painkillers and may even be more effective for nerve pain because of the duel effects from the narcotic properties as well as the NMDA antagonism.

If you have constant pain then these are really the route to take. I have chronic pain and I have found that I prefer to use shorter acting painkillers in managing my pain. Different regimens work for different people and with a caring doctor you will be able to find what works for you. I wish you all the luck in getting your pain managed.

Symptoms Herniated Disc L5 S1

For back surgery, is a discectomy or disk-replacement surgery better?

I’m in early 30’s, diagnosed with a significant L5-S1 herniated disk, with left leg sciatica symptoms that hurt all the time and make it very difficult to walk…it’s been five months now, physical therapy seems to have been ineffective, as well as my first epidural, and it is recommended now that I not get any additional epidurals. Two weeks ago, could lift leg 1 1/2 feet straight up, now it’s about 6 inches. Only way to get through the day and do some work, is to take percocet with about 3 pain patches on the worst pain areas. Have my second neurosurgeon appointment shortly, expect a recommendation of ASAP surgery, or latest in two months. Thoughts appreciated.

Neither is a really good choice, but only a neurosurgeon can really answer this question. In my eight years as a PT, I’ve yet to actually see more than one person who has the replacement. Granted, he did fairly well, but in my own experience, neurosurgeons are very slective in whom they perform these procedures…even the “experts” who are doing all the research. Upon speaking with a neurosurgeon myself, she told me “It’s not where we want it to be yet.”

As far as a discectomy, this is a pretty radical procedure for someone with a HNP…you’re setting yourself up for neurological impingement later in life. A microdiscectomy would be a better choice for longevity or even a laminectomy, depending on your situation.

You’ve done PT…have you seen someone who is credentialed in mechanical diagnosis and therapy? I would highly suggest it if you haven’t done so already ( http://www.mckenziemdt.org ). Not everyone can be helped with this method, but many more a helped by this than by those who complete “core stability” or other types of “standard” physical therapy. At the very least, if you cannot be helped with this, it will be known shortly.

I’ve seen several young people like yourself go through percutaneous disc decompression which is a much less invasive procedure and tends to get good results (uses a needle to actually drain the herniation). I would ask about this as well.

Good luck

Herniated Disc Home Treatment

Treatment for herniated ro bulging disk?

My husband has had a bulging disk for a few years now. About a year ago he was in the hospital from it because of intense pain. He was given pain meds which helped and in tie it got better. Now he is having intense pain again. He is having trouble breathing and hurts so bad it is making him throw up. a week ago his doctor gave him pain meds, anti-inflamatory drugs and prescribed PT for a few weeks. They also gave him lidocane patches to put on his back to numb it at night so he could sleep. The anti-inflamatories, pain meds and patches are not working. PT was supposed to start this week, but he is unable to do it b/c the pain is so bad. Doctors don’t want to do surgery because the disc is in his upper spine and they said they would have to go through his lungs which I don’t understand. Any ideas what else they might be able to do? He is young (29) and we have 2 small children at home and he currently can’t spend much time with them b/c he is in such bad pain.

Your husband has a case of pinched muscles in his back that are causing this pain for him and once they are released he should be rid of most of, if not all the pain he is in. I have found out myself that the medical field is ill equipped in such an elementary thing as a pinched muscle, I spent over 25 years in pain myself until I found how to release those muscles. When pinched in the chest area the pains will feel like a truck on his chest because as the muscles tighten up they won’t allow him to take a breath anymore and when he does he can get shooting pains as the ribs do expand putting more pressure on the pinched area. When pinched in the lower back they can put pressure on the nerves going to the stomach which is going to upset it. Here is how he can release the muscles in his back and get rid of the pains:
Back:
(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and find the muscles next to your spine and press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
