Herniated Disc In Back

herniated disc in back
I had a lower back (herniated disk) surgery, end up having bumps in in left foot.?

I end up having several hot burning bumps in my left foot after a lower back(herniated disk) surgery. Where those came from?

Several hot burning bumps sounds like a heat rash to me. I had one when I had to put a splint on my arm. I would try to keep socks off for a while and don’t wear them unless you have to… (same with shoes). I don’t think this has anything to do with your back. :) )

Herniated Disc Back

herniated disc back
I have a herniated disc and need to have an epidural in my lower back. Does this really relieve the pain?

Would having an epidural injection for a herniated disc in my lower back help relieve pain, or would I be taking a risk?

I have had many spinal injections and it does depend on what kind you are having a simple nerve injection or a lumber puncture. The more common is injecting into a spinal nerve ending which is not too painful a bit uncomfortable for a few days after, it should not be very painful during the procedure. This type of injection can last from about 6 months to a year with reasonable results a decrease in pain and often allowing more mobility because of less back and leg pain. This type of injection can be repeated on a regular basis and some hospitals will give you a direct phone number to book a repeat injection when necessary. It is fairly risk free but don’t drive directly after and take a friend as sometimes the legs go wobbly for a while, temporary side effects.
The lumbar puncture steroid injection is a very different procedure and not as common these days, it involves injecting steroid straight into the space in the spinal column. It is a more risky procedure and can be fairly painful but can greatly help especially when mobility is near non-existent, strenghtening the spine and helping some people to walk again after serious spinal problems.
Personally if it is an epidural nerve injection I would advise you to have it, they work extremely well, in my experience they have improved the pain by up to 30% and greatly helped with mobility. The small amount of discomfort is worth it and a good hospital should have a repeat program, bypassing long waiting lists, so that any releif gained can be maintaned.
If you are worried about any risks it would be best to discuss it with your specialist or a member of his team who will reassure you.
I hope this helps and feel free to mail me if I can help with advice

Herniated Disc L3 L4 L5

End of My Sciatica or Muscle Spasm?

I’m 18 with 3 herniated disc (L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1) and have been dealing with a sciatica for the last month and a half. Now I can’t lay on my stomach or back on a solid surface(floor) and relax my back without terrible pain in my lower left back and upper thigh. I also feel like I’m not able to stand up completely straight. Is this a muscle spasm? How do I make it away?

Hi Grace

Have you had an MRI? If so, make sure you have a follow up with a neurologist. If not, get an MRI done. I also have herniated discs L4/5 and L5/S1. I feel your pain (leg and back!) I am 28 and first injured my back many years ago. Some days are good for me and other times it will all flare up (leg numbness, back pain etc). Some advice that has helped me over the years:

You need to sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs.

Take Glucosamine Sulphate. Drink lots of water.
.
See a PT or Osteopath, they will be able to massage certain trigger points which may relieve some of the leg pain and ease the muscle spasm in your back.

Make sure you stretch every morning and evening when it is not acute, be gentle with this during extremely acute phases. Stretch your hamstrings, glutes and hip flexors in particular.

Ice the lumbar spinal area, or some heat on the muscle spasms will help (yes that is muscle spasm you describe – its your body’s way of protecting you from further injury by freezing you up with a spasm)

REST while it hurts, whatever you do, do no physical excercise. This is disc injury and it needs to heal.

Take anti-inflammatories like diclofenac sodium enteric and see if your doctor may prescribe some muscle relaxants just for this spasm stage?

Finally, be realistic, this may never heal 100% and you must always be aware that you have had these injuries and that you are weak there. Good luck (especially if you ever decide to get pregnant like I did, my baby is due in seven weeks and my discs are playing up badly again!)

Herniated Disc Healing Miracles

I have leg pain 2 wks after discectomy. Has it failed? I had no leg pain for 10 days post op. I’m worried sick

I’ve had sciatica from a herniated disc for over a year. I eventually had a micro discectomy 2 weeks ago. Immediately after the op I had no leg pain at all – it was like a miracle. However, now, 2 weeks on, the pain has returned. Is this because of the healing process on my damaged nerve, or has the op failed? Has anyone else had a similar experience? My follow up appointment is not for another 4 weeks and i’m terrified that I’ll have to live with this horrible pain forever. I’m only 30 and the thought of that is awful.

I have had two discectomies and that’s been the typical pattern for me with both. I had the first one at 32, so close to your age too.

In my experience, the pain returned at that point because that’s when my surgeon encourages a slow increase in physical activity. At my 10-day post-op visits both times, I was given a sheet of very simple exercises to begin doing (tip-toe standing, knee bends, and walking 20 minutes on the treadmill 5 times a week). They don’t seem all that hard, but it takes much more out of your body than you expect! The increase in activity will bring back some of the pain, but as you get stronger and more active, it dissipates again.

Make sure you’re following the restrictions your surgeon gave/gives you, down to the letter and only increase your activity in the amounts they direct. Also, be patient and allow your body time to recover completely. They may call it “micro” surgery, but your body may disagree!

And one other thing – that 18% success that other poster mentioned? That’s a crock, unless you have a freakishly bad surgeon =:-o

Herniated Disc Acupuncture

herniated disc acupuncture
No cure for herniated discs?

I’m 18 and have had a herniated disk for a year now. I’ve been carrying my unbearably tired and painful leg around with me hour after hour after day after day, hopeful for it to get better.

But after an entire year, it still gets as bad. I can’t sleep or walk comfortably. I,ve tried physiotherapy, osteopathy and acupuncture. None of these helped.

I don,t believe there isn’t a cure for this horrible condition. There must be SOME WAY to make the disc STOP pressing on my nerve!!!!!!!!!

ANYONE, PLEASE ? I’m desperate for the pain to stop. sometimes i even consider chopping my leg off.

See a pain specialist. They have lots of other ways to treat pain including TENS an electrical pain blocker.

Herniated Disc L4 L5 Surgery

herniated disc l4 l5 surgery
Herniated Disc – Who is the best Dr. to treat/rehabilitate? Very little desire to get Surgery. ?

Got MRI; L4 and L5 are herniated. Saw a Physiatrist and she gave an epidural and a back specialist (Chiro with Ortho training). They tend to think Surgery is not necessary- can get around but have daily pain in the morning—walk for 20 minutes and it almost disappears! (very strange how that happens- but thank god it does). Can anyone recommend a type of person to see or a specific DR? Physical Therapy only seemed to aggrevate it more. It’s hitting the sciatic nerve so the pain is more in the leg- not so much the back.

You should probably take some anti-inflammatories for the sciatica- which should help. If you go see a physiotherapist they should be able to treat you and give you some light exercises designed for your injury. I had L4L5 discectomy not long ago, but the physio helped keep the pain off for a while; and does alot for strenghtening your back muscles.
You’re better off without the surgery, it’ll never be fully cured if they operate once..

Edit: Chiropractor messed me up big time!

Herniated Disc L5 S1 Treatment

can your back injury get worse over time?

I had a back injury back in 2006 while on active duty. I had 2 herniated disc L4/L5 and L5/S1 and they caused sciatica and degenerative disc disease. I got out of the army for this. I had a MRI done back in late 2008 showing that I was forming lumbar scoliosis and that discs that never shower up before on out of place. I still get numbness going down the back of my left leg from sitting down too long. I can’t bend backwards or forwards like I used to. My pain has increased and I’ve never had any treatment for my back injury other than steroid injections. What is going on with my back and has it gotten worse since the original injury?

I practice in a military community and see lots of army retirees with the same problems as you. Unfortunately, the military doesn’t perform the highest quality of medical care known to man and they seem more eager to discharge with medical disability for life than actually fix your problems. Their typical answers are pain killers, muscle relaxers, and steroid shots. This is a shame because given the proper therapy at the time (chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, rehabilitation exercises) of injury you could have recovered full (or close to it at least) function and been given a chance at maintaining your back in good shape and avoiding back surgery in the future. Unfortunately, it sounds as though you are heading in a surgical direction and only aggressive therapy will likely prevent that.

Steroids shots do weaken the holding elements in the spine (joint capsules, tendons, muscles) and in my opinion they are borderline malpractice given the research that is present today. Just Google it. Lifetime recommendations are usually 1 shot up to a maximum of 3 shots. I have seen patients in my office that have had over 16 shots in one session! How is that not considered insanity. But you can’t sue military doctors so they can pretty much do whatever they want without repercussions.

Now that your back is essentially “jacked up” the process of deterioration will accelerate. Without proper mobility, stability, and alignment things will wear down as if they would if you had tires that were out of alignment. Now is probably the least of your concerns. What I would be concerned about is how bad the back will be in ten years.

Its time to make a decision now to avoid having a major problems in the future. In your case even waiting another year or two could make a dramatic difference. Eventually you will pass the event horizon and surgery will be your only option and your outcome from that surgery isn’t guaranteed.

I recommend you suck it up financially and find a good team of chiro, physical therapy, and massage therapy, and maybe even acupuncturist that will work together for YOU! It’ll be an investment but after 12 weeks you should see an improvement. If you improve keep up with the conservative care until you feel 70-100% better and then maintain it. If after 12 weeks you aren’t much better than surgery is your option and get it done now while the problem is less. because in 5 years it’ll be a much more extensive repair than it is right now. And stay away from needles and shots unless its an acupuncture needle.

I hope this helps.
