Herniated Disc Medication

herniated disc medication
medication for sciatica not working?

I’m an 18 year old female. I just got diagnosed with a mild irritation of the sciatic nerve and a possible lumbar herniated disc. I was given a painkiller ( diclofenac) and axogaurd. Which doesnt seem to be working , and I don’t know but my muscles are twitching more and the pain in my thigh has become more frequent, not excruciating , but pretty annoying. should I ask for a stronger painkiller ? I’m leaving for my vacation in a week . I don’t want to be in any discomfort.

cuz the things that caused the herniation in the first place have not gotten corrected;; no matter how much you think this is gonna go away, it’s not until you make changes to your usage of your trunk…you should have ask for a PT referral for body mechanics..every time you guard to protect that back from pain, you are pulling on the muscles & then restricting them in a way that causes them to yank on that already herniated disc (the vertebrae surrounding to be exact);; when you hold your breath, the same situation arises (breathe OUT instead, like when you sit<>stand, getting in & out of the car, getting in & out of bed & rolling in bed);; the anti-inflammatories will help get the swelling down which is also another cause of your sciatica..a cold pack will help to supplement your pn meds..& you just need a more effective pain med than the one you are taking presently;; but honestly, the pain meds & mm relaxers will help the back but won’t overcome the way you treat it…good luck on your vacation, but treat your back well..if you are driving vs flying, put the pillow on your chest…NOT the back of the seat (it will only be worse for you back there..way too much movement)..remember, in front..again good luck!!

Herniated Disc Surgery

herniated disc surgery
what are the rules the doctors give you after herniated disc surgery? Do you have to stay in bed for awhile?

My fiance is about to have this surgery and I want to know what I should expect.

He will spend a lot of time sitting up and laying down but he must get up and start light walking asap. He will be pretty sore for a few days and the pain meds will sedate him for 3 -5 days. After about 2 weeks he can start to try and see what he can and cannot do. His body will let him know.

Make sure to drink plenty of water with the pain meds and don’t take more than the dosage stated no matter what. If the pain medication doesn’t relieve the pain call the doctor and ask him for help.

Good luck

he’ll be fine and is lucky to have someone that cares about him enough to find out ahead what to expect. Because he will need your help

    Herniated Disc While Pregnant

    herniated disc while pregnant
Can a woman get pregnant while having herniated and bulging discs in their back?

Why not? What does that have to do with conceiving a child. The only problem is that sex might be uncomfortable with disc problems and there might be more of a strain on her back when she’s pregnant but, other than that, I don’t see why not. Of course, your GYNO is the best person to ask about this. We don’t know your individual situation and yours might be different and prohibit pregnancy for some reason.

In any case, maybe surgery would be indicated on your back if that is indeed stopping you from being about to get pregnant and have a baby.

    Herniated Disc Physical Therapy

    herniated disc physical therapy
How long did it take for your herniated cervical disc to start feeling better?

I know everybody is different, but I am just curious. I have 2 herniated cervical disc and have had 11 physical therapy appointments so far. I am still having pain from my shoulder blade down to my finger tips, plus some tingling and numbness in my hand. My doctor said I’m not improving as much as he would like. If I’m not feeling better in a month (8 more p.t. appt’s), we will be testing for nerve damage. I also started taking Mobic last night (anti-inflammatory) and it’s not helping. I’m already taking Vicodin for the pain and Robaxyn for muscle spasms.

What has your experience been like?
    Hi Richard,

I’m 33, 5′4″ 115 pounds. I have an office job so I pretty much sit all day. I keep healthy and don’t smoke.
Oh…and my therapist is doing everything you mentioned, plus massage..

Everyone is different. No two injuries to the same area react the same for everyone. You don’t state your age, weight, height, degree of shape that you are in, posture, nor career. All of those are points that make up what is going to happen and how long recovery is. If you smoke the recovery time is greatly increased. The number of appointments may or may not be enough depending on who is doing the therapy with you. There are many techniques that will hasten the relief but that will depend upon the practitioners experience. Talk this over with the therapist and explain how you feel if they are good they should modify the program and hopefully what they are doing is hands on work and not the use of modalities. The fluid material of the disc is more like a yogurt than water and it will move but more slowly than that of water. You sort of have to influence that material away from the nerves. Posture is so important in this as when you are not in proper posture it definitely influences the material to flow towards the nerves. Also poor posture is stretching the muscles making them more irritated and that also caused pain. Some people are lucky in that within a few visits the pain starts to recede while others it takes a while. Surgery is not something that you would want as it is risky and the failure rate is around fifty percent. Work with your therapist and if therapy consists of just modalities such as ultrasound, electric stimulation, heat or ice then if that is all they are going to do find another therapist that will work with you hands on without the other stuff.

    Herniated Disc Remedies

My mom hurt her back at work & is in alot of pain, wondering how I can help her if at all?

My mom works at a factory & injured her back awhile ago & had xrays done & had a herniated disc, well it healed some & was ok until last week or so she bent a certain way & now she is in total pain & pretty much laid up. She went to her chiropractor & he said her pelvis is causing her pain due to the repetive work she does at work. I feel so bad for her & she is in so much pain & Ive tried to help her by getting her things, doing grocery shopping for her etc but is there any remedies or anything to help her w/ the pain? Her chiropractor never gave her any pain meds.

Here are a few sites you should look at with Mom. They can really help. I’m sure she is proud of you for wanting to help.

Here are a few that can help her deal with the pain

    http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/guide/pain-management-back-pain

    http://health.discovery.com/centers/pain/pain.html

These may help you understand the injury

    http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000686.htm

    http://spine-health.com

Here are a few interesting articles on back pain and dealing with it

    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/chronic-pain/AR00017

    http://www.drbookspan.com/BackPainArticle.html

She has a worker’s comp case,, have her go to an Orthopedic doc or at least a GP. Forget the chiropractor unless at least a MD refers one. If she has had this condition it won’t get better,,,only worse without proper medical treatment. Her employers insurance has to pay for it so get the best medical care you can,,, not the cheapest.

I have a spine injury and know what happens if you don’t take care of it. You can help her the best by getting her good medical care. Good luck

    Herniated Disc Emergency

    herniated disc emergency
back injury and knee injury cant be a sprain?

i injured my back yesterday. and left knee. i went to the hospital and had xrays done. they came out ok but i still have pain shooting down my legs and real bad pain in the knee and back. the pain killers aren’t working. and im having trouble urinating. shouldn’t they have done like a MRI. i have to go back and see the doctor on the 22nd. or should i go back to the emergency room? and how long does it take for a back injury to heal? i think its a herniated disk? as i have all the signs of that. my knee is badly swollen now i think i tore something in there that a normal xray doesn’t show. same thing in my back a regular xray cant possibly show torn ligaments and muscles can it?

They should have done an MRI. You should go back to the ER. If is excruciating pain and you can’t stand it, and pain killers don’t work, your brain is trying to tell you that something’s wrong.

    herniated disc l4 l5 symptoms

    Two Level L4-L5-S1 AxiaLIF

What are some of the reasons I might need a Posterior Cervical Laminectomy & Discectomy?

This surgery is usually recommended to address problems of:

    1. Herniated Nucleus Pulposus
    2. Bone Spurs
    3. Foraminal Stenosis
    4. The main reason for this surgery is pressure on a nerve going to the arm.
    5. Cervical cord compression causing myelopathy (weakness in arms and legs).

    Posterior Cervical Fusion

Posterior cervical fusion is done through the back (posterior) of the neck. The surgery joins two or more neck vertebrae into one solid section of bone. The medical term for fusion is arthrodesis. Posterior cervical fusion is most commonly used to treat neck fractures and dislocations and to fix deformities in the curve of the neck. Surgeons sometimes attach metal hardware to the neck bones during posterior fusion surgery. This hardware is called instrumentation.

What are some of the symptoms I might experience?

You might experience all or some of the following in your arm and/or hand: pain, numbness, tingling, weakness.

    How is the surgery done?

An incision is made at the back of the neck, and the muscles pulled to one side. The lamina (the “roof” of the spine) may be removed in order to decompress the spinal cord, or only the part of the lamina may be removed that is over the foramen where the nerve roots are being trapped. A foraminotomy, making more room for the nerve root, or a discectomy, removing protruding part of the disc or disc fragments, may be done to relieve pressure on a nerve. The muscles are released and the incision is closed.

The cervical spine begins at the base of the skull and supports the weight of the head. The spinal cord runs from the brain down through the cervical spine, controlling the function of the body’s organs and limbs. In between each of the 7 vertebrae of the cervical spine are soft pads or discs which act as shock-absorbers and allow for bending and movement of the head. Each disc is made up of two parts, a soft center called the nucleus and a tough outer band called the annulus.

    Herniated Disc Treatment At Home

    Slip Disc Treatment

    What is a slip disc?

A disc is said to be slipped when it bulges or tears out of its protective ring of connective tissue. It is also called bulging disc, ruptured disc or herniated disc.

    Slip Disc Treatment

Slip disc can most often be treated by addressing the causes that led to this condition.

    1. Self treatment

Simple home treatment like hot and cold applications accompanied by rest can often relieve the pain caused by minor cases of slip disc. The patient may also take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers like Tylenol and Advil.

Simple exercises that strengthen and stretch the back may provide a lot of relief. Physiotherapy and massage may also help, if required.  95% of the people are cured by these simple steps.

    2. Change in life-style

Overweight people may also suffer from slip disc. The excessive flesh around the waist causes strain on the lumber spine which supports the entire weight of the upper body.  When the discs in the vertebrae come under pressure, they tear out of their boundary and press against the nerve roots.

Obesity often occurs due to lethargic lifestyle and uncontrolled eating habits. Eating vegetables and fruits, taking physical exercises regularly and positive thinking can go a long way in reducing the weight and pressure upon the lower back.

    Medicines

If the do-it-yourself efforts fail to treat the slip disc, the patient may take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and narcotic pain killers. This may be accompanied by muscle relaxants if the person is suffering from spasmodic pains in the back.

    Injections

If the oral medicines do not work, patient may have to take steroid injections into the lower back area where the slipped disc has occurred. These injections generally have to be taken once in every three months.

The medicines or injections should only be taken at the advice of the doctor.

    Surgery

Surgery should be considered only as the last option when every other method has failed. It should be confirmed through tests that the slip disc will cause a potential damage to the nerve roots. Even in surgery, there are several options. You can consult the spine specialist which option will work best in your condition.

Are you suffering from back pain due to slipped disc? It does not matter that you have suffered from it for 10, 15 or even 30 years. You would be completely cured in just 21 days even if you are a lost case. Click Here Right Now  to learn more about how you can get fast and permanent relief from any kind of back pain.

How Spinal Decompression Can Help Relieve Your Back Pain

Have you had back pain for years and don’t know where else to turn for relief?  If you take medication for it, you have to keep taking more just to get the same effect.  If you have considered surgery, you know there are no guarantees that it will be better afterward.  And what about the restrictions and risks involved with any type of surgery?

You may feel like life is passing you by. You aren’t able to do the simple things like you used to do.

Today there is a solution for your back pain.  You don’t have to live with it anymore.

A team of top physicians and medical engineers developed what is called spinal decompression. It is a non-invasive and non-surgical treatment and it uses state of the art technology to apply a distraction force to relieve nerve compression often associated with low back pain and sciatica.

It was developed to effectively treat back pain and sciatica resulting from herniated or deteriorated discs.

Dr Michael Elkins DC was one of the first in the Bowling Green area to offer spinal decompression to his patients. He is also an official Lordex Spinal Decompression Instructor for Kentucky. Dr Elkins focuses on herniated and bulging lumbar discs with or without complications, degenerative disc disease, relapse or failure following surgery with single or multiple levels of herniation, facet syndromes, and carpal tunnel syndrome. In addition to traditional chiropractic techniques, Dr Elkins is committed to your health through a combination of Chiropractic, Chiropractic Rehab and Decompression Therapy.
