Sciatic Nerve Symptoms: Number of Warning Signs You Should Watch Out
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, which extends from each side of lower spine through rear and back of the thigh and then down to foot. This vein connects the spinal cord with leg and foot muscles. When there is an irritation or compression of the nerve roots in the lower spine, it may result in sciatic pain. The most common cause of sciatic pain is an irritation of L5 or S1 nerve root in the lower spine by the herniated disc.
Gunshot wounds, fractures of pelvis and other trauma to buttocks or thigh most commonly injure the sciatic nerve. The systemic diseases like diabetes may damage it. Due to this, the pain radiates into the rear and extends down back of the thigh and calf. Occasionally, it may extend down to the foot. Tingling, numbness and prickling or burning sensation are the most common sciatic nerve symptoms.
In most cases, a simple irritation to the sciatic nerve is the main cause of sciatic pain, which may be healed with time. However, some sciatic nerve symptoms may indicate somewhat serious injury to sciatic nerve.
- If numbness or weakness is present, the sciatic nerve may be damaged and you need to seek medical attention. If the pain and symptoms are extremely severe due to compressed nerve, you may need to undergo surgery.
- If there is incontinence of bowel or bladder or progressive weakness or loss of sensation in legs, then it indicates a serious condition, which requires immediate medical attention.
Generally, sciatic nerve symptoms affect one side of the body. The pain may be sharp or dull and burning or it may be accompanied by the intermittent shocks of shooting pain that starts at the buttock extending down to back of the thigh and leg. Sciatic pain then extends below the knee and may be experienced in the feet. There may be numbness and tingling in the leg. Patient may feel it very difficult and painful sitting and trying to stand up. The pain may be intensified with coughing and sneezing.
One of the most common sciatic nerve symptoms is similar to the pain that occurs during a severe leg cramp, such as extreme pain in low back extending to one buttock and down the leg. Pain generally worsens on bending forward or exertion. There may be numbness and weakness in the leg as well as diminution of the reflexes. Pain may be so severe that the lower back gets locked in sideways position resulted from a strong contraction. True sciatic pain occurs due to compression of sciatic nerve roots because of herniated lumbar disc.
In case of longstanding history of sciatic pain, the pain may gradually get localized to the buttocks and back of the leg. In such situation, the patient may experience a vague aching pain, which does not extend to the lower leg or foot.

so that we will be prepared spiritually for when the Lord comes to bring us back home. I was told I was an “earth mother” by a friend whom I helped when I was a teenager. I encouraged them to keep going to school, ride a bicycle, and took walks together. We went on picnics at the beach together. I worked after school in a department store after school while in high school to earn some money. I have had friends in many states who were from many different cultures and some different religions. I think it is unfortunate that we can’t all get along and be civilized towards each other.
After many years of marriage while living in Southern California
and Southern Florida, my daughter became upset with me because of the stress of listening to me warn her of Chuck Erwin’s threats to call my children up after he attacked me in the knees, choked me and smashed his head into my face, saying “Germans have hard heads” I was told by a neighbor that I wasn’t German enough. I certainly was glad I was not like him. I had told him I favored the Jews and was against the Nazis during the Holocaust and told him I wanted to separate before this happened.
This time was especially hard for my son who gave clothes and
things away to other runaways who were victimized and who tried to protect friends and refused to tattle on others suffered much because of prejudice and jealousy. He tried to get a beeper back for a girl when a guy stole it from here. When I drove my son to Circles of Care for therapy and some help to calm down because he felt very angry, the intake person refused to admit him, saying “There have already been three fights on the ward.” He should have been helped. He should not have been refused because he would not have ended up trying to find a rehab and upon returning to the community been labeled abusive because his girlfriend’s stepfather gave him some alcohol.
My daughter, who listened to her brother’s problems there, made it to college in the science field. Neither my children nor I were diagnosed with anything mental all the way through California where I got along very well with everyone at work and in the neighborhood where I walked with my children and family dog and rode a bike with my daughter. My son rode a skateboard pulled by his German Shephard, Sam.
My family intermarried with a Jewish lawyer on my father’s side. I had none until the some people wanted me labeled mentally ill after head injuries suffered during the divorce. A medical student asked me after therapy, “Could you live on peanut butter sandwiches? Would you eat me?” I handed a letter of complaint in to the hospital administrative office there. I was even punched once at home and my head hit the corner of the microwave and I fell down. When I complained at another hospital that one brother punched me in my arm for a verbal disagreement aqnd that brother kept trying to say that I was always just nuts because I called the cops. I had a fist sized bruise on my left arm and my brothers talked to the doctor. My family was very emotionally upset because my ex-husband
had me served by a deputy sheriff all the way from Florida to
subpoena me for the divorce even though he knew he and a car
accident had disabled me. My family was all getting along before
that. They had all gone to therapy together. I was asked if I wanted to stay overnight and then forced to stay and grabbed by several guards and pulled by my arms and my legs like Nazis would do at Methodist hospital for trying to leave as a voluntarily admitted patient who had complained about difficulty walking because I had herniated discs. The doctor was Jewish. One doctor did say that many Catholics did descend from them. A patient said they give electric shock treatment there which sounds like something the Nazis would do because it would damage your central nervous system more instead of treating you with massage and nutritionally help and counseling as I would do and did for my children, husband after Hurricane Andrew. I gave my current fiance whom I love very much. He is my best friend. I gave him a lot of loving care, massage therapy, nutritionally help which I fed him as well as cooking for him and bathing him, just like I did my children.

I have found out the hard way that if you file a complaint, some
people are dishonest. My son’s head was struck by a baseball bat of a boy who was warming up in Moreno Valley while Sal was running the bases. That’s a physical injury. Dr. McGrath said there was nothing wrong with my son except that he was an angry young man. His father told me our son’s nose was broken by a baseball in Homestead, FL. Our son’s nose has been broken three times now, and the prison staff will not give him medication to stay calm nor has he been given an MRI or CATSCAN. When I last visited last year, we played chess, and he won. The guard yelled, “Don’t let him win!” He came over and took the game away from us even though visiting hours were not quite over. He has been interrogated and asked what he is and where his family is from. If they scream in your face, and you get angry, the inmate gets thrown into solitary confinement and his weight goes down to one hundred annd fifty pounds after thirty days. When he gets out, my family sends him money for his inmate account. He is normally two hundred and ten
pounds and six foot three inches tall. Imagine that he received
awards at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Florida. He also was sent to basketball allstars.
I enjoyed seeing the talents of beauty of my children and of their friends. Everyone should be proud of their heritage and children should be taught to respect both parents and authority at school. My granddaughter is of mixed descent. She is a beautiful little girl, and my grandson is a handsome boy. I read to them both and send them gifts when I can.
I love the innocence of children and always did. I always knew
there were too many problems in the world to move children around unless the families stick together and love and pray

Pain in the arm, shoulder or neck is often a clear indication of a herniated cervical disc. In specific these symptoms may involve any of the following: dull or severe pain between your neck and shoulder blades; pain that shoots down your arm towards your fingers; and a tingling sensation in the shoulder or arm. Turning the neck certain ways and angles can also induce the pain.
A herniated cervical disc is a result of the breaking open of the outer layer of the disc (annulus), which then allows the inner jelly like substance to protrude resulting in the herniated cervical disc. A herniated cervical disc does not always have instant symptoms- it may take time for the pain to be felt, and often the problem is diagnosed by X-ray when patients have a different problem. When the pain of a herniated cervical disc takes hold, patients will want to see a doctor as soon as possible.
There are various aspects and information your doctor or physician will request to aid diagnosing a herniated cervical disc, these include: a physical examination, neurological examination, medical history review, evaluation of your symptoms and breakdown of previous treatments you may have tried. The doctor will also most likely request an X-ray to see if such conditions as osteoarthritis are a related cause. Further to this the doctor may also ask for a CT or MRI scan to locate the herniated cervical disc and to further isolate the extent of the damage. A Myelogram may also be requested if the case is severe.
If the doctor proves that you have a herniated cervical disc, surgery will not be the first treatment option. Your doctor or physician should immediately recommend cold and heat therapy to combat the inflammation in combination with anti inflammatory medications. Physical therapy would also be advisable, under the strict guidance of a physical therapist. Some physical therapy methods include stretching, gentle massage, neck traction, and ice/heat therapy.
The majority of sufferers of a herniated cervical disc will notice a considerable improvement in their symptoms within 4 to 6 weeks. For this reason, conventional treatments usually work, and surgery is not likely to be appropriate nor required, so the news is generally good.

The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain and possibly tingling, numbness or weakness that travels from the low back through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of the leg. Sciatica occurs most frequently in people between 30 and 50 years of age. Often any particular event or injury does not cause sciatica, but rather it tends to develop as a result of general wear and tear on the structures of the lower spine.
Common causes of sciatica are Lumbar Herniated disc, Spinal Stenosis, Degenerative Disc Disease, Spondylolisthesis, Piriformis syndrome and Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction.
Exercise is usually better for healing sciatic pain than bed rest. Sciatica exercises are also important for the health of the spinal discs. Movement helps exchange nutrients and fluids within the discs to keep them healthy. Many sciatica exercises focus on strengthening the abdominal and back muscles in order to provide more support for the back, so do Pilates.
Many Pilates studios are marketing their services as a treatment for lower back pain and sciatica, but does Pilates really help? Yes, it really helps if you find a good Pilates instructor who has back pain rehabilitation experience and who is familiar with your diagnosis, diseases and symptoms. Why Pilates instructor knowledge is so important? Because all Pilates exercises do not fit all sciatica clients and some exercises might be even contraindicated.
Spinal stenosis: Focus on flexion exercises (forward bending). Flexing the lower spine relives pain and nerve irritation for people with spinal stenosis. They often feel better bending forward than standing up straight. Still it’s important to strengthen back and abdominal muscles and teach posterior pelvic tilt which allows the client perform more activities and exercises with less pain.
Degenerative Disc Disease: Focus on spinal stabilization exercises, back extension exercises including the McKenzie method. All Pilates exercises are focusing spinal stabilization, so Pilates for DDD is really beneficial. However, back is fragile for DDD clients, so full flexion and intermediate spine articulation exercises are in some cases contraindicated.
Spondylolisthesis: Focus on flexion based exercises and spinal stabilization program. It’s important to teach how the lumbar spine remains stable in a flexed position.
Piriformis syndrome: Focus on stretching piriformis muscle, hamstring muscles and hip extensor muscles. Maybe only stretching exercises is enough to help to decrease this painful symptom. Finding neural pelvic position, spinal stabilization training and hip range of motion are all important for people with piriformis syndrome.
Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: Focus on restore range of motion in SI-joint, which can be limited if the joint is inflamed. So, spinal stabilization, pelvic and hip exercises are all good.
All the above diagnoses cause sciatica pain but as you see the recommended exercises are very different. Pilates in general is good but definitely there is no “one size fits all” exercise for sciatica pain clients. It’s very important for Pilates instructors to know the client’s history of sciatica pain before they plan any Pilates program for their client. However, carefully planned Pilates program with a good hands-on skilled instructor make the life of sciatica pain client easier by relieving pain, strengthening and stretching muscles and increasing spine and joints range of motion. “Motion is lotion” is true here.

Researchers tell us that for every inch that the head shifts forward of the shoulders, weight is increased by 10 pounds. Therefore, a 12 pound head held forward 3 inches forces the cervical extensors (semispinalis, splenii, longissimus, upper traps, etc.) to isometrically restrain 42 pounds against the unrelenting force of gravity. And we are surprised why so many clients/patients present with degenerative disc disease, head pain and TMJ.
Forward Head Postures resulting from improper sleeping positions, driving stress, computer neck, whiplash, and improper breathing habits leads to muscle strain, disc herniations, arthritis, pinched nerves and instability. Poor health can result from stretching of the spinal cord. According to Erik Dalton, major factor in head, neck, jaw and shoulder pain is due to poor posture including fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and chronic fatigue syndromes.
The extra pressure imposed on the neck from altered posture flattens the normal curve of the cervical spine resulting in abnormal strain of muscles, ligaments, fascia and bones. According to the respected Spine Journal, 2006; 6:591-694, forward head carriage produces accelerated degeneration of intervertebral joints resulting in degenerative joint disease (cervical osteoarthritis) and osteoporosis.
The ramifications of poor posture go far beyond just looking awkward. In reality, according to the January 1994 issue of the American Journal of Pain Management, posture and function are related in that poor posture is apparent in clients/patients with chronic pain-related conditions including low back pain, neck related headaches, and stress-related illnesses.
Posture influences, and moderates every function from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by poor posture. According to the Mayo Clinic Health Letter Vol. 18, #3, March 2000, the results of long term forward neck posture leads to “long term muscle strain, disc herniations and pinched nerves.”
When spinal tissues are made to endure prolonged compression, they deform and undergo a remodeling that can become permanent. Correction of poor neck posture is key to stopping and reversing decay and degenerative disc disease and pain from headaches, rib dysfunction and Dowager’s Humps…but it takes time and a concerted effort using modalities such as Myoskeletal Alignment(R) to correct the damage caused by faulty neck posture.

Lower Back Pain Causes, Symptoms, Treatments and Exercises
One of the very common medical problems is low back pain. Lower back pain is pain felt and travels in the ribs particularly in the back or in the upper part of legs. This pain starts suddenly and could be the follow up of strain or an injury. Sometimes the pain may not have anatomical cause. Sit up or turn over posture may be difficult and the worse could be bending or sitting. Even a sneeze or a cough can be painful.
Back pain normally gets resolved within weeks but the pain undergone by the patients is unbearable. Conservational treatments are normally taken for lower back pain since it is temporary and slowly resolve with time.
For a speedy recovery, proper treatment has to be started only after knowing the exact cause for its occurrence. The main reason for lower back pain can be Lumbar muscle strain and ruptured disc or herniated disc. Disc damage in the inter vertebral column leads to Discogenic lower back pain and this could be diagnosed using discogram. But this in no way relates to herniated disc where the back gets pressed to the nerve. Aging population come across Spinal stenosis as the spinal canal is thinned. This may happen due to arthritis or any other specific conditions. Any joint ache is termed arthritis and particularly on the spine creates lower back pain.
Spinal stenosis causes back pain in the aging population. As we age, the spinal canal can become constricted, due in part to arthritis and other conditions. If the spinal canal becomes too tight, back pain can be the result. Spondylolisthesis occurs due to the instability of adjacent vertebras which start to slip. This results in unstable spine and ends in lower back pain. Osteoporosis Leads to many orthopedic complications and is mostly referred as the compression fractures of vertebral column. This weakens the bones and hence the possibilities of getting fractures are more .If back pain continues for 6 weeks or less it’s referred as acute. If this continues for less than 12 weeks it is described as sub-acute. It’s termed as chronic if it persists for more than 3 months.
Diagnosis is helped by blood tests and scan but not to a greater extent and X rays are not advised due to high radiation. Muscle strain heals quickly as the blood supply is good and carries the needed nutrients with proteins for healing. Bed rest is advised for severe pain but not for two days or more. Hot or cold application eases the pain to a certain extent. People who are active with good physique can avoid low backache, as there will be regular stretch of muscles. The supporting muscles of the spine are extensors, which include back and gluteal muscles, Flexors, which comprise abdominal and iliopsoas muscles and the last one is the side muscles also called as rotators. It’s also referred as Obliques .Not all these muscles are used in day-to-day life and they get weakened with age.
Lower backache exercise program should combine stretching and strengthening exercises with aerobics. Common symptoms of lower back pain for people less than 60 year old will be pain in legs or numbness and pain during movement and sitting. Older people will have symptoms like increase of back pain during the morning g and evening periods with stiffness in the back and. pain is also felt downwards in the legs. Psychological reasons play main role on pain levels and so person’s attitude and situation plays an active role.
Neurological symptoms like weakening, feeling of numbness or tingling sometimes accompany pain. Immediate attention is needed if there is a dysfunction in bladder or in the bowel and weakness or numbness in the groin.
Precautions like avoidance of stress and maintaining proper weight with regular exercise help in eliminating the problems of lower back pain.

I have a herniated disc and my doctor recommends surgery. I had it six years before. While it made me feel better right away my chiropractor said that since they take some of the disc that slips over that causes your bones to rub together. Anyone else decide against the surgery? Why or why not? He said he didn’t think physical therapy would help.
The herniated disc is in my lower back. I believe it is L4. It’s above the one that I had surgery on six years ago.
It’s distressing when physicians will not even attempt physical therapy prior to surgery or narcotics.
Of those with herniated discs, good candidates for physical therapy include those whose pain is intermittent (meaning symptoms might be there frequently, but there are at least a few instances when pain does not occur, or pain only occurs with assuming a particular posture or movement), or does not extend below the knee and changes with different movements and positions. This demonstates that the disc has the ability to change position…physical therapy is the key to finding the right movement to induce the right changes.
Conversely, constant symptoms (meaning there is never a moment of relief…), symptoms that worsen and stay worse with all movements, symptoms that extend below the knee and presense of a shift in the spine towards the side of symptoms generally leads to a poorer prognosis. Not that people who have these symptoms can’t be helped, it’s just that the more of these you have, the more likely you will fail with PT.
A sudden inability to contain your urine or significant focal weakness (such as a footdrop) are the only real true indications to go immediately to surgery.
